Camera Help

{Wearing: Splendid Top (c/o), H&M Shorts, Zara Pumps & Matt&Nat Clutch}
I have been wanting a DSLR for a while now so with my birthday coming up I thought maybe I'd ask for money to go towards one. Unfortunately I hate doing research before purchasing anything so I have no idea which camera I want to get.

Instead of reading reviews written by people I don't know I was thinking I would ask my lovely blog friends for camera suggestions. If you have one you love please tell me all about it. If I have to do research on my own I'll probably go insane and I'm weird enough with my sanity intact.

    1. Haha to clarify, my blog photos are taken with a DSLR, just not mine ;)

  2. What, how do you not own a DSLR?? I totally thought you did... you must have a really good point and shoot. For my blog, I use a Nikon D90 and an Olympus Pen EP-3 (not a DSLR but a Micro 4/3 camera). The Nikon takes really nice pictures but it's not the most user-friendly. I've heard that the Canon Rebel line is a really good starter DSLR.

  3. You'll enjoy owning your own camera. Any of the Nikon's or Canon's are good. From what I understand, and I really don't pretend to understand much about this bit of technology, it is the lens that will make the difference. So if any research would have to be done, it would have to be on what lens you want to get to achieve a particular type of effect. Sorry, I know you just said you don't want to research, but it's just some food for thought.

  4. Oh, the eternal camera problem... We shoot on a Nikon D300S, but as great as the pictures are, it's just too heavy to be practical when you need to carry it around all the time. Before that we had a Pentax K100. I wasn't crazy about it but I know they've made HUGE improvements to it, and released a K200 version, in the past few years. I'm told it's the best starter DSLR. But honestly, Ian is the camera expert ;) I just bought a new camera and it isn't even a DSLR, just a micro 4/3rds. Clearly shows how dedicated I am!

  5. I'm on the hunt for a DSLR as well. Usually, I'm loyal to Canon - but I'm really leaning towards the new Nikon D3100. I've heard great things - plus you can use a remote with it.

  6. I have a canon t1i, but there are two new versions since (t2i & t3i) and all of those are great! I also REALLY suggest getting the canon 55mm 1.8 lens to go with it - it's about $100 and makes a HUGE difference in photos!

  7. I love your blouse. Such a lovely print. I use a Canon Mark ii 5D to take all of my blog pictures and I LOVE IT! Highly recommend.

  8. Yup, I agree with Kate the Canons are great. I just went from shooting on a Canon Rebel DSLR to the Canon 60D + I have the Canon 55mm lens - love it!! Good luck & happy camera shopping! xo

  9. Hi Melissa, I'm a Nikon girl, but it's what I always aspired to own since I was young! Personally I use a D40X (and love it) but as Natasha said above, it's the lens that makes the big difference... whatever you do, don't buy an off-the-peg, slow zoom lens unless you will also use it for everyday snaps as well. You MUST buy a fast lens!! For a translation of that jargon (sorry!) I have been posting a series of Photo Tips over the last few weeks, you may find these ones useful:

    6 Camera Equipment Essentials and How to Achieve Bokeh (Blurry Backgrounds) - I have tried to explain stuff in layman's terms :)

    It's always a good idea to have a demo in a shop to get a feel for whichever camera you have your eye on and to make sure it's user-friendly - get an experienced shop assistant to explain how to change the controls for the effects you want to achieve and see if you find it straightforward. I'm sorry I haven't helped with an actual model suggestion, but I've made expensive mistakes in the past by not getting a "feel" for a camera! (I have a photography degree - but I'll always ask shop assistants for their knowledge of actual models as that's what they know about and I don't. If you're clear about what you want to photograph and how, a good shop will help you spend your money wisely :)

    Good luck!

  10. Really, at this point - you can't go wrong with WHATEVER you choose in the market. Canon or Nikon buy the 50mm 1.8 (1.4 if you can swing it). If you're not super picky, head into a local camera store & see what they have used body only & then spring for a nicer lens. I have a Nikon D90 & a Canon 7D and I love them both. Truthfully, I prefer the feel of the Nikon but the menus of the Canon better. Good luck and happy early birthday :)

  11. I got my first DSLR for last Christmas - a Canon Rebel T2i... it is a great beginning camera due to its easy interface, but it has lots of power for taking great shots, and can easily be jazzed up with new lenses as your skills improve. Can't wait to see what you get!
