Rule Breaker

Blazer & Scarf: Gap
Sweater: F21
Jeans: True Value Vintage
Boots: Payless
Bag: Plum

If you are against mixing navy & black or black & brown then avert your eyes... because I just did both.

This outfit is a plethora of rule breaking and I love it.

I haven't always been such a rebel. I used to be really matchy matchy. If I wore white shoes my purse had to be white. If I wanted to wear brown shoes I couldn't have black in my outfit. When I was in grade 7 I owned a purple sweatsuit and I refused to wear the sweat shirt and sweat pants separately. After all, if I didn't wear both purple pieces together I'd just look plain ridiculous.

I actually remember the first time I read in a fashion magazine that your purse and shoes could be different colours. I assumed it was a typo.

I'm happy that I've grown as a person and I'm able to clash with pride. Now if only I could grow enough as a person to be able to stop procrastinating doing the dishes... now that would be something to blog about.

  1. Hahaha, love the "I assumed it was a typo" bit! I can't stand when things are too 'matchy matchy' - definitely love a mixed up look, and I think you did it very well!

  2. Another great post, Melissa! You look super gorgeous in the first photo... you have such a great smile and u look super happy. Funny, you say that you are breaking a lot of rules but I wouldn't even have known had you not said. I guess us fashion bloggers just get kind of immune to dressing to society's standards? Haha.

    Happy Monday girl!

  3. Oh gosh, one of the women in my office who takes great pride in being stylish said something about *needing* to wear a blazer that came with a certain pair of pants, together. Why on earth would you buy them if you're going to wear them separately?!

    Oy.

I love the mixed neutrals here and I especially love that bright scarf! You look great!

  5. haha thank youu! i feel like i'm always "breaking the rules" but rules don't even really exist anymore. Now you're even allowed to mix prints. I love how these things that were previously considered fashion dont's are now more encouraged! This outfit look perfect! I think the colors look great. =)

  8. Oh man, I am so not a matchy-matchy kind of girl. I feel like everyone can tell I was trying to match on purpose and for some reason that makes me feel awkward!

Looking cute as usual, Melissa ;)

  9. Ha - my sister used to have this purple nightgown that she would wear with matching purple earrings.

Like, she bought earrings just to go with the pj's she put on after her bath.

  11. I am usually against the mixing of blue, black and brown - but I do think it can really work sometimes and THIS is the perfect example. The whole outfit flows perfectly. It's a great subtle statement. - Katy

  12. I too used to be all matchy matchy... but over the past year or so have loved mixing "taboo" colors. I wore a ton of black/brown this winter and even paired gray/brown a few times.

Loving your blog and photos of Vancouver. I am moving there next week and am very excited!
