Goldilocks

Blazer & Brooch: The Vintage Valley
Tank: Gap
Jeans: True Value Vintage
Shoes: Urban Outfitters
Purse: Spotted Moth

Here is my lazy tip of the day. Want to make a jeans and tank combo look special without putting any effort into it? Throw on some gold. In this case I chose a vintage black and gold blazer (and my gold bow brooch). Easy peasy and it looks like I tried when I really didn't! How amazing is that? You are welcome.

Now, for the real reason for the Goldilocks title of my post. While I am a natural blonde, I do get highlights (I'm only a partial fraud). At this point, as you can see in these photos, I have a good 2 inches of roots going on. They drive me CRAAAZZYYY. Seriously bonkers. Normally at this point (or a month ago) I would have raced to the salon and thrown some bleach on those roots but I'm kind of getting tired of paying sooo much mooooney on my hair. I don't even want to think of how much money I've spent over the years on highlights. eek.

At the rate my hair grows it'll take 15 years to grow my hair out so I don't know if I'll have the patience... AND I legitimately have no idea what colour it will turn out to be. I'm assuming dirty blonde? That's the colour of these roots at least. I'm going to attempt a grow out and if it drives me crazy enough I'll either add a couple highlights (dear hair dresser, how many highlights can you give me for $20?) or I'll dye it brown.

Okay phew, I feel better now that I've talked about this. You may call rambling on about blonde highlights shallow but I call it necessary. Unless you've paid a salon bill for a head full of bleach highlight foils you don't understand the financial investment I'm talking about here ;)

My other tip of the day? Vintage shopping with your fashionable cousin is the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning. Especially when she finds you the perfect item to buy! If you follow me on twitter you might know about my purchase on Saturday, but if not... well that's your fault for not following me on twitter and  now you'll NEVER* know what I bought!!

(*when I say never, I mean you'll know as soon as I post pictures... which will be soon ;))

  1. Ok your roots definitely do not show through in these photos but I feel your pain. Believe it or not the other day I just died my hair light brown myself b/c I was sick of the same problem and had wanted to grow it out but I couldn't take it anymore! I'm a natural dirty blonde too (I THINK?). It was a really subtle change, I don't think anyone has even noticed but at least my roots aren't driving me insane anymore. The last 2 posts on my blog are with the light brown hair, even though it looks way more dark blonde.

K longest comment ever, SORRY, you just were speaking to me with the hair. Love the gold outfit :D

  2. Aw, cutie cousins! And lovely, you do not have visible roots. In the least. I thought this post was titled goldilocks because you just got your hair done! So fret not, you can just keep growing and it's likely none of us will even notice! On an outfit related note, I love these shoes! So cute.

  3. I am going to agree with the above two comments and say that you definitely can't see your roots. But I totally understand where you are coming from. I have NO IDEA what my natural hair color is because I go so often to get it colored. Anyway, great blazer! You pull it off so well!

  4. What?! Alicia is your cousin??? Woooow, definitely never knew that! It must be so great to have a relative that you can shop with and also talk blogging with! Anyway, love this blazer. It reminds me of one that I saw at H&M in December-ish, but this one is much less crazy/more Vancouver-appropriate. And you're right, it does make you look special instantly!

  5. Miss Melissa,

What a great investment that you found at the Vintage Valley! Seriously, we can never find such wonderful goodies like that! I guess it takes a lot of time and effort, plus Vancouver probably has better deals ;) Richmond has nothing! We rarely spot anything this amazing! & No worries, you didn't ramble! We totally understand what it comes to styling hair..

  6. Fashion runs in the family! You girls are so cute. Love the gold & black vintage blazer, what a great find! & I can definitely say my wallet is a happy camper since I went back to my natural hair colour. Although I still wish I could afford beautiful blonde highlights!

  7. I let my hair go o'natural about 6 years ago and I haven't regretted it since. Well since the 6 months it took my roots to grow out.

  8. I don't think I even see any roots showing - and I went back to look after reading your post. You just look gorgeous!

Now, I have to go find me some gold so that I can look put together in jeans and a tee.

  11. That blazer is beaaauuutiful! You look amazing in it. And I haven't had my hair dyed in... A YEAR! Yikes!! I have some very funky regrowth going on from a semi permanent but it's only noticeable in certain lights.. I hope. I hear ya... it's just too expensive! (And I would rather buy shoes with that precious money).

  12. Yay I've found another local blogger! :) I absolutely love your blazer and shoes. And don't worry, I can hardly see your roots! I'm waiting for my hair to grow out (it's very short) and that is going to take a million years. (well maybe 5) haha

  13. All of your comments are so kind! If they aren't obvious in these pictures then it must be good lighting because truuust me.. these roots are noticeable. At least to me. But isn't that always how it is? haha

And for those of you complimenting the blazer, the Vintage Valley is an online shop so all of the searching for vintage pieces is done for you! http://vintagevalley.com!

  15. Ummmm... your roots are nowhere near as bad as mine currently are yet I too refuse to pay the $200 to get my hair re-dyed. I'm secretly hoping it will just magically turn into ombre hair but I don't know if I can wait that long, haha
