Today is the start of my 3 day weekend and I am so happy. I have been really goal oriented lately which is exhausting... lazy Melissa was far less tired at the end of the day. I'm just happy that my schedule is back to normal. I don't know how the holidays can throw me for such a loop but I spent most of January feeling a little lost. The next few days will be busy ones but Sunday will be a day of pure relaxation... I can't wait!

Keeping Warm

So here you have it! What I wore during Vancouver's cold spell (literally the entire time, except I changed my underwear and socks). Oh, and I was wearing gloves while prancing in the snow and in these photos my gloves were in my pocket. Can I just say that while most of me was comfy and warm my legs were freezing? Jeans are horrible in the cold. I realize this every year but assume the following year my jeans will get their act together and start warming my legs up.

I am going to invent the following jeans to prevent future leg frost bite:

~~Fleece lined jeans~~. (I just googled them, they already exist)

Sweat pant lined jeans.

Hot water bottle lined jeans.

Bubble wrap lined jeans (these have nothing to do with being cold but I think they'd come in handy when I walk into my coffee table).

Don't bother copying those ideas. Talking about them in a blog post is the same as patenting the idea.

3 Types of Outfits

There are three types of outfits you will see on my blog in the winter.
.

Outfits #1: I wear these outfits when I'm outside for longer than 20 minutes. You will be able to spot these outfits because I am really bundled up. There will be a scarf and toque involved (if you haven't noticed, I haven't been outside for longer than 20 minutes yet. It's cold and I'm a wimp)

Outfits #2: I wear these outfits when I am outside anywhere between 2 and 20 minutes. If I know I will be parking my car and might have to walk a few minutes to my location, I wear these outfits. You will be able to spot these outfits because they are practical but not extremely warm. They usually involve a winter coat layered on top but for photos the winter coat is removed.

Outfits #3: I wear these outfits when I will be running from the car to my destination and will be outside for under a minute. You will be able to spot these outfits because you probably thought "how the heck has she not frozen her butt off!?". A skirt with no tights is a prime example of outfit #3. Taking photos of these outfits usually risks hypothermia but I do it, because I love all of you very much.

This outfit, is an outfit #2. It was warm enough (with a winter coat layered on top) for a 10 minute walk to the restaurant but there was a scarf and toque in my humongous bag that would have quickly turned it into an outfit #1 if necessary. Taking my coat off for the photos and the fact that it's a really thin blouse made it temporarily feel like an outfit #3 which made me want to dive into my bag and turn it into an outfit #1. I have this down to a science ;)

Before the Cold Hit

Knowing that this week was going to be an insanely busy one, I made sure to take some extra photos last week so I could focus on work right now. Can I just say thank goodness I did? Winter finally hit Vancouver and it is cooooold.

I have a few more outfits from last week that I will be sharing with you and I'm assuming that when I'm not so busy with work and I'm ready to take photos again it'll be hot outside. Does anyone know the weather report for Monday? Sunny with the chance of extra sun?

I tend to hoard my favourite pieces in my wardrobe and save them for special occasions but it turns out I don't have very many special occasions to attend. It also turns out that by the time a special occasion does come around I want to buy a new favourite piece so I have this collection of amazing jewelry and gorgeous dresses that I never wear. In the spirit of wearing my clothes and jewelry more often (read: budgeting) I decided that my Pegasus necklace couldn't just sit on my dresser so I took it out to play. I may have been a little overdressed for my lunch date but that's nothing new!

Many women have firsthand experience with the horrors of getting a cancer diagnosis such as mesothelioma. To get through the difficult time, women should focus on something positive that can make them feel stronger and more beautiful. If women can keep their minds on positive thoughts, they can beat down the negativity and fear they may be feeling. One area women can focus on is fashion.

When women look great, they tend to feel better about themselves. No matter what the circumstances may be, fashion can help a woman feel strong and confident in her own skin even when her body is fighting cancer.

Women struggling with a cancer diagnosis often feel weak and don't even want to think about how they look. However, make-up is a great way to help change those negative feelings into positive ones. By getting up and applying make-up, women feel more confident about their appearances. When a woman feels confident about her looks, that confidence can spread to other areas of her life. For example, a beautiful woman might feel confident that she can beat cancer. Her positive thinking may help her body heal to get through the needed treatments.

Many women feel like they look their best when they wear feminine skirts or dresses. Women who are battling cancer often feel drained and certainly don't feel feminine and pretty. The best way to combat these negative feelings is to buy a few new dresses or skirts that will bring back these pleasant feelings and help a woman remember how strong and gorgeous she is. A new skirt in a gorgeous color or a new dress made of soft, luxurious fabric can make a woman feel beautiful in her own skin again and remind her that she has the ability to fight her cancer. Sometimes a woman just needs a little reminder that she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to, and dressing up can help a woman do just that.

It's amazing what the perfect pair of trendy new shoes can do for a woman's mood. It can be too easy to let a cancer diagnosis dampen the spirits. A woman cannot help but smile when she looks down to see cute shoes on her feet. Somehow, a new pair of shoes can take any outfit from drab to fabulous and lighten the mood. A new pair of shoes can serve as a small reminder that happiness can come from any source.

To increase their survival rates, women have to remain confident and strong to beat their cancers. Dressing fashionably can keep a woman's thoughts positive and help her beat her cancer.

So it turns out my closet is full of men confusing clothes. I'm not trendy enough to be a full man repeller but I love clothes that men are confused by. Maxi skirts, midi skirts, blouses that tie at the neck, high waisted pants, faux fur... they just don't make sense to men. Jeans and a t-shirt. That makes sense. Mini skirts. That makes perfect sense. Covering up every inch of your body and then throwing on a faux fur vest? Confusing.

On this very windy day I decided to confuse the male gender by doing just that. Aside from my shoes, I probably repelled every guy in Vancouver with this outfit. But do you know who would love the fact that I'm covered up everywhere but my neck? The cast of Twilight. Just sayin'.

Stripes & Plaid

I know I've complained before about people staring while I'm taking photos but I have really been working on not letting it bother me. I know it comes with the territory. This photo shoot however, was hilarious. Every time Cara pointed the camera at me someone would appear out of nowhere, walk through my photos and we'd have to stop. Every... single... time. There is a black squirrel that likes to show up when I am taking Cara's photos but he's cute. The people walking through my photos? Not as cute as squirrels.

I guess I just don't understand how some people can think that walking on a sidewalk is more important than two girls taking photos on that sidewalk. So rude. ;)

As much as I love a good lazy day maxi skirt, my go to for every day has always been skinny jeans, a blouse and a coat (or when it's not winter... my lovely blazers). It's just such a simple way to look put together. Lately I have been gravitating towards mixing rich colors, like this wine blouse and blue coat, but keeping the accessories simple. I have honestly worn a version of this outfit every day for almost a week so just be happy I don't post daily outfits or you'd be ready to give me a lecture on variety. Although yesterday I did throw a brooch on this coat to try to distract people from the fact that I'd worn it so much. Don't focus on the coat... focus on the shiny object I pinned to the coat! I think it worked.

I wish I could celebrate that it's Friday with all of you but today is my Sunday and tomorrow is my Monday so instead of celebrating I'm sad that my "weekend" is almost over. Having the occasional week days off work really isn't all that bad though. Grocery stores are far less busy during the week and day time tv is always fun. Oh, and making dentist appointments on a week day is always a breeze so I have that to look forward to every 6 months.

So while all of you countdown the end of your work week and the start of your weekend, I will be counting down the days until my next week day dentist appointment. Jealous?

A Case of the Lazies

I took the week after Christmas off work and was suuuper lazy. It helped that I was sick for most of the week so I had an excuse for rarely leaving the couch but regardless I didn't really do much. Now that I am trying to get back into the swing of things I'm finding it difficult to shake the lazies. As I get dressed I stare at my sweat pants with puppy dog eyes and miss their coziness. Since I've already shared that I consider maxi skirts to be my favorite sweat pant replacement option and this sequin H&M sweater is as comfy as a bedazzled house coat, this outfit was a perfect pj replacement. (For the record, I didn't wear heels for very long. My flat boots were waiting for me in my car).

This skirt has sat in my closet unworn for almost 2 years. It's a gorgeous skirt but for some reason it never inspired me. When I put on this stunning necklace and started rummaging through my closet for something to wear with it I spotted this skirt and fell in love all over again. So after 2 years of neglect it finally made it's debut... and right in time for the holidays!

You know those decisions that you regret immediately after making them? For me it was when I pulled into the underground parking lot of a really busy mall yesterday. I was down there sitting in a line up of cars waiting for parking spots for 45 minutes. I wanted to just leave but I literally couldn't move. I have never experienced such insanity. I thought I was a genius for waiting until the 27th to go shopping but I was wrong... oh so wrong.

I wish I could boxing day shop but I'm not a fan of the crowds. Did any of you do any shopping? Find any good deals?

Normally my goal when getting dressed for the holidays is to get as overdressed as possible because it's the one time of year I can wear sequins to my parents house without getting judged. This year, thanks to the nice stomach bug that attacked me on the 23rd, I had two goals. One, to be able to stand up for longer than 2 minutes at a time and Two, be comfortable. Maxi skirts are the new sweat pants. And ladies, a little tip... if you find a maxi skirt with enough volume, like this eshakti skirt, you can wear your sweat pants under it and no one will be the wiser.... not that I would do such a thing.

Trench Coats & Hypothermia

Yes, you are correct, trench coats are not warm. In an attempt to not wear one of my many black coats I decided to mix it up with a trench. Bad choice. But I am still torn about which coats to buy! There was a burnt orange one at Zara I loved but how often could I wear such a unique coat? Do I spend money on special coats that stand out or basic black that I can wear over and over again? With Christmas looming I can't bring myself to buy a new coat even though I really really want one. Maybe I'll take a look after Christmas. Or maybe Santa will bring me the Milly Coat that was on the wish list I sent the Anthology (you sent that list to Santa... right Kelsey?). For now I have a goodie coming from Ego Closet to tide me over and hypothermia from wearing a trench coat in December. Oops.

You can tell when I am in a public place taking photos because I whip out my three "I don't think I'm a model" poses. People passing by don't always bother me, but when they do, these poses help me feel less like a wannabe model in their judgmental eyes.

Pose #1 says: I don't think I'm a model. I'm just standing in front of my favourite gate and I want a photo of it

Pose #2 says: I am just going to adjust my purse here and oh shoot, my friend accidentally took a photo of it. darn.

Pose #3 says: I think I have something on the back of my shoe here... let me just check before we go... oh no, another accidental photo... that's too bad.

I don't even mean to whip out those poses... It's my survival instinct.

Vancouver has had some pretty spectacular weather lately. It hasn't been perfect but there have been lots of sunny days which is such a pleasant change. The sun however doesn't mean that it's warm, which is something I seem to forget as I get pick out outfits when the sun is shining through my window. So I get dressed, walk outside and immediately have no feeling in my legs. Then to make matters worse, I have decided that I obviously can't wear my coat in my photos. So at this point I am officially standing on the beach in the middle of December in an outfit I could have worn back in June, getting bizarre looks from people passing by while they wonder who the crazy coat-less girl is. This crazy girl is a style blogger. Obviously.

Spa Boutique's 1 Year Anniversary Celebration

On December 8th, Spa boutique on west 4th celebrated their one year anniversary so my friend Masumi and I headed over there for wine, cupcakes and some pampering.

We sat and spoke with a professional esthetician from Dermalogica about our skin. My skin is a little dry and of course one of my worries was aging so he put together a skin care "prescription" of their products that would best benefit my skin. We then took off our makeup (eep!) and with careful instruction from our esthetician, gave ourselves Dermalogica facials.

This couldn't have come at a better time for me. This past year my skin has really started changing and I've been a little lost as to what I should use. After learning all about my skin and these products, I ended up picking up a few Dermalogica goodies. I loved that if I wasn't happy with the product I could bring it back. Investing in skin care products can be scary so a money back guarantee eased my worries.

After our facials we got our makeup done and browsed the skin care collection at Spa Boutique. I picked up some gifts for everyone in my life with bad skin. Haha no I'm obviously kidding (or am I?) but I did buy some gifts while I was there.

It was lovely to meet Natasha and Crystal, and to chat with Sophia and Rick.
I was a little worried about taking too many photos because the store was filled with makeup-less women who probably didn't want to be captured on film. Luckily, Rick was able to take fantastic photos and wrote up a great post on the anniversary so he made up for my camera shy-ness.

(no) signature style

Whenever I've been asked to define my style I have a really difficult time. One day I could be dressed like an old man and the next in red heels and a red lip... I don't really feel like I have a "signature style". Or maybe I do and I just can't see it? I love a good blazer or vintage brooch but they are just thrown into the mix, are they a part of my signature style? Some bloggers are solely vintage, others are all about dresses with tights and others are trendy man repellers. I just like to dress the way I feel that day and each day I feel differently.

I'm going to open this up to you ladies (and perhaps gentlemen). Do I even want a signature style or is it better to mix it up? Do you prefer when bloggers have a style that's easily to define so you know what you're going to get when you click on their site? Do you find it easy to define your signature style? Do you think a signature style is important? What are your thoughts?

Wrinkle Avoidance

Let's just get it over with and talk about what all of you are thinking, that my dress is horribly wrinkled. I have worn this dress before and know that as soon as I put it on and sit down it's going to be a wrinkled mess so I can't even play dumb. I just like it. It's a pretty color and comfortable so I just have to avoid mirrors all day while wearing it so I don't have to face the reality of my wrinkles. I also use this mirror avoidance technique on bad hair days, during the appearance of any breakouts, and on days where I forget to put mascara on one eye and leave my make up at home by mistake (it happened). Of course taking photos of myself makes that whole avoidance thing a little more difficult. So how about we all get on the same avoidance page and pretend that my dress isn't wrinkled at all... deal? Brilliant.

I still can't believe Christmas is so close. I have a huge list of Christmas activities that I want to complete but I can't seem to find time for any of them. The only thing I've had time for is eating sugar cookies and crying over my lack of will power. Just kidding, I don't cry, I just eat more cookies to mask those negative feeling. 'Tis the season! No but seriously, I really don't understand how I can never find time to complete any task on my to-do list but can always find time to sit and play around on pinterest for hours. I thought I might need to re-calibrate my priorities but then I realized all I needed was a new to-do list.

Not to brag but I checked every single one of those tasks off that list.

Vancouver Fashion Showcase

Vancouver has such an amazing fashion community and the Vancouver Fashion Showcase did an outstanding job at showcasing it. They partnered with Dress for Success to put together a spectacular weekend of parties and shopping. I attended the opening gala at the art gallery where 30 top fashion retailers were featured in one of the most upbeat and unique fashion shows I’ve ever seen. It started off with a Michael Jackson impersonator and featured other dancers throughout. So much fun.

Cara, who has a gown collection that would put Kate Middleton’s to shame, was my date and we enjoyed some wine, oogled over a gorgeous display of Stella & Dot jewelry and tasted some delicious cake. And of course, we chatted with some of Vancouver’s most fashionable people.

One of my favorite things to do when I'm alone* is to put on music really loud and dance around like an idiot. I used to do this all the time when I was a teenager and last night I decided I was tired of being an adult so instead of doing anything productive (ie, dishes or laundry) I danced around. At one point I did attempt to do some laundry but it turned into more of a trying on clothes/dancing session which became counter-productive as most of the clothes I tried on were originally hung up and then ended up on the floor. 15 year old Melissa would have been proud.

(*I use the term "alone" really loosely because sometimes my friends and family are there when I have dance parties. I'm pretty convinced the faces they maks while I'm dancing are because they are jealous of my kick ass dance moves)

I am officially into full Holiday mode. This weekend I worked but that didn't stop me from doing some holiday baking. Unfortunately I had a total sugar cookie fail moment when my cookies expanded into one huge sugar cookie with Christmas shaped indents in it. I had much better luck with my batch of gingerbread men. Now I just have to decorate them which I fear will be a moment comparable to the efforts of a kindergarten class.This is why I stick to buying pre-made cookies.

Tonight is my work Christmas party and I need to get back to organizing the final touches. Don't worry, I didn't bake any of the desserts for the event. I did however put together the candy bar because if there is one thing this girl knows it's candy.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

I guess now that it's finally December I should embrace the cold weather and stop traipsing around in blazers as my outerwear and freezing my buns off (okay, we all know that isn't going to happen).

Last week I spent a few hours at Barefoot Contessa on Main street and put together a list of my favourite gift ideas for the mom's, sister's, best friend's and event hostess' in our lives. I loved my picks so much that I purchased a pretty amazing bundle of gifts for my loved ones (hear that people in my life? you're going to love your gifts!). I wasn't going to buy anything for myself, which is a ridiculously difficult task when you are in a boutique like Barefoot Contessa, but I couldn't resist this darling button toque. It's just so warm and girly. Their entire collection of toques was just lovely. If you're looking for some gift ideas head over to Barefoot Contessa and see what I picked out! I was lucky enough to attend both the Mavi Shopping event and Banana Republic x Vitamin Daily Shopping Party all in one evening. Since they were the last of all these amazing shopping events I thought I'd end with some sparkle and throw on some sequins.

The Mavi event was held in their Yaletown store. We enjoyed delicious cocktails and cake pops while getting our eyelashes done and makeup touched up. We also got to meet and chat with some of Vancouver's bloggers and tweeps. Eryne did such a spectacular job with this event.

The Banana Republic x Vitamin Daily event was hosted by two of my favourite bloggers, Kelsey of The Anthology and Anya of I'm the It Girl. Cupcakes and champagne were flowing while the ladies got their nails done and makeup touched up. One lucky gal even won a $500 shopping spree! Lisa and the Vitamin Daily ladies sure know how to throw a party!

The shopping events have come to an end and I have officially put a huge dent in my Christmas Shopping (and potentially gained 5 lbs from all the delicious snacks). Thank you again to everyone who put on these amazing evenings. I feel so honored to have been included in all of the fun!

Another shopping party meant another opportunity to snack on some treats, get my hair braided by Blo's Braid bar, and chat with some of Vancouver's very fashionable ladies. Each member of the Style Spy styled an outfit using the gorgeous pieces available at the Gap right now and someone was lucky enough to win one of the outfits! I have always been a fan of the Gap so browsing through the holiday collections was right up my alley. I am now in desperate need of colored denim.

PS, Yes I have noticed that I am wearing a lot of blue lately... While I'd like to say it's on purpose and that I know something about the color blue that you don't, it is really just a coincidence.

On the weekend I attended the Le Chateau and Flare Magazine Shopping event.

I used to shop at Le Chateau all the time but for some reason haven't shopped there in a few years. I was pleasantly surprised by their selection of outerwear, shoes and accessories. Their scarves came in gorgeous colors (I picked up an orange one for myself).

I have a few more shopping events to share but seriously, after all of these amazing events I will never be able to shop regularly again. I will walk into a store and demand champagne, a hair touch up by Suki's and to get my nails done.

I will also ask to have models walk around the store with Luisa Rino from Flare talking about all of the latest fall trends that store has to offer. I've officially been spoiled.

I'm a sucker for comfy. This over-sized grandpa sweater may now be my favorite piece in my closet. It's just been so cold out lately and anything that is snuggly and warm (like the snuggie I mentioned) just makes me so happy. So on those busy days on the go it's grandpa attire all the way.

For some reason I'm not a huge accessorizer. I always admire people who can accessorize the heck out of an outfit but I tend to go for one focus piece, like a statement necklace. Otherwise I like dainty pieces like pearl earrings or a diamond tennis bracelet. That's how I accessorized my last outfit and I was about to post these pictures in the outfit post until I realized that this gorgeous bracelet from Anjolee deserved a post of it's own.

I loved that all of the Joe Fresh clothing was hanging in the closet because for some reason it was easier to ~~pretend that everything was in my closet~~ look at. The men's, women's and kid's collections were all of really high quality and the colors will be perfect for winter.

Comfy at Brunch

My hair has already lightened quite a bit so I get to go back to the hairdressers later this week for a brunette touch up. We had a feeling when I went darker that it would fade really quickly, but thanks to my "OH MY GOSH I AM GOING TO HAVE A BREAKDOWN" panic attack before the hair dye went in, she was too scared to go as dark as she needed to to allow for some fading.

I vowed to spend this whole week off of work sleeping and so far I've done a pretty darn good job of that. The very few times I have been dragged out of bed I have been trying to stay as comfortable as possible and this outfit did just that. It was like wearing pj's and a faux fur rug to brunch which I feel pretty confident saying is every girl's dream.

It turns out my love for maxi skirts is only going to work this fall/winter if I wear snow pants underneath them. After these photos I bundled up and we went for a walk and the freezing wind froze me to the bone. I thought wearing tights under the skirt would be enough but boy was I wrong. I've seen fleece lined tights at BeautyMark and at the Gap they have tights that claim to create warmth while you're wearing them so I might have to pick up a couple of those to prevent frost bite. Or I could just go with my snow pants idea. Layering is in style right?

I have been thinking about going darker for a while but I chickened out before every single hair appointment. This time I decided it was now or never and went for it (don't you love how I made myself sound super spontaneous when it took 30 minutes of freaking out in the hair dressers chair before I'd even let her dye it hahaha).

So far the reactions have been mixed. Most people have been super sweet and kind. Some people (my Mom) don't like change and aren't a huge fan of the new look. And others (my Dad) didn't notice. Pfft, men!

Time has officially flown by. Through a blur of work and more work I think I missed all of October. I realized today while walking to lunch on sidewalks covered in old fallen leaves that I haven't even taken pictures in a pile of those leaves yet! Those are my favorite pictures all year. I managed to find an area with 8 leaves to take these pictures so I'm half way there. Apparently this is as autumn themed as this blog is getting this year.

Winter Coats

I've always had a tough time spending a lot of money on coats. I'm not sure why considering how much use I get out of them. Especially in the winter when most people don't even see your outfit, they just see your coat and whatever winter accessories you throw on to keep warm.

I love the look of a classic black pea coat so I have had one in my wardrobe but this year it's gone missing. I honestly have no idea where it is which means... time to buy a new coat.

Now I'm trying to decide if I want to stick with a classic black pea coat or go for something different. There are so many colors, lengths and styles to choose from.

Here are a few that stood out to me while looking online. It's getting colder and colder with each day, I better make up my mind soon!

Post-Halloween Laziness

My life has been themed lately, and that theme is "lazy".

I had two Halloween costumes this year and they were:

Girl who fell asleep on the couch
and
Girl who just rolled out of bed (when I was at work, this costume temporarily switched into "nerd" because I was wearing my glasses).

See? Lazy.

And this outfit here? This is what is going to happen from now on when I would really love to be wearing my pajamas but I have to put on real people clothes. A midi or maxi skirt and whatever I decide to throw on over top. I know I know, you don't have to tell me, I'm a fashion inspiration to all of you ;)

Jacqueline Conoir / JAC SS12 Fashion Show

Last week I attended the Jacqueline Conoir / JAC SS12 Fashion Show at the stunning new flagship boutique on West 5th. Designer Rozemerie Cuevas launched her new JAC line this year after celebrating 25 years of success with her Jacqueline Conoir line. The entire night was spectacular. Champagne, chocolates, good company and of course, an amazing fashion show.

The Jacqueline Conoir line was a mix of flowy feminine pieces and work appropriate pieces. The entire collection was full of vibrant colours and gorgeous patterns. It would be perfect for someone looking for a wardrobe that could take them from the office to a night out.

The JAC line was a bit edgier and my personal fave. I wouldn't consider my style very edgy by any means, but the pieces in this collection could easily mix in with any wardrobe to add some interest.

It's a Battle

I can't believe that a few days ago it was blazer weather and tonight I was bundled up in a winter coat and scarf. You'd think that seasons changing wouldn't surprise me every year but it does. I am always caught off guard by the cold.

The same thing happens when it rains. I always act so shocked and then complain about how the rain ruins my hair but I live in Vancouver. I should have gotten over the whole rain thing by my 2nd birthday.

Anyways, I spent a majority of today on the phone arguing with my cell phone company so I'm out of things to say right now. I just feel like in the cell phone world, nice guys finish last. I could put up a huge fuss about my broken phone and yell and swear and all that jazz but I don't want to. I just want the fact that I've been a loyal customer for 10 years to matter. I want the fact that my phone's software has gone to crap twice in a year to mean that I can get a phone that isn't broken without paying upwards of $300. I want being polite to pay for once... but it won't. It'll be a battle.

I think I am going to cuddle up with a cup of tea and a nice warm blanket and try to forget about my day. Good night my friends.

Thin Layer of Lace

You know those days where you get dressed, leave the house and then realize that if you take off your jacket at any point during the day your sheer top will result in you being a borderline nudist? Yah I've had two of those lately.

It's not like I was giving it all away for free, but there is something unnerving about sitting in a restaurant and knowing that the only thing separating your waitress and your bra is a thin layer of lace.

Luckily for everyone I won't be able to have very many borderline nudest moments any more because last night I realized that Fall weather has finally arrived. It's time for sweaters, scarves and winter coats my friends. And mittens. And drinking hot chocolate to keep warm. Sounds awful ;)

Really excited to be here with you on Melissa's lovely blog. She is such a class act. I really enjoy how she styles statement pieces (fur vest, lace blazer, etc...) in a trendy, wear-able way. Her looks have cohesion and a really personal stamp on them. Beyond style, her fun and super sweet personality comes through her blog as well of course.

Ruby Girl blog is my much-needed creative outlet. I love putting together looks that reflect my self-diagnosed "ladylike glam" style. I'm a little crazy, and wholly laugh-inclined, which certainly can't escape the blog.

Here are the trends I've been ooh-ing and ahh-ing this season...

1. The ginormous infinity scarf. Honestly, I care 8512315435 times more about form than function, but this one makes the cut on both counts. It's super cozy warm and a dramatic eye-catching piece.

2. Leather pants. I know, so rocker and punky feeling, which is really not me. But they can be styled super classy, I promise.

3. Lace-up booties. Ahhh! I just smile thinking about them.

4. Chiffon is the new cotton, as I shared on my blog last week. It flows beautifully and took runways by storm at NYFW.

5. Orange! It's so perfectly fall and is the perfect offset to a neutral outfit.

I've always been a bit hesitant to jump on any sort of new technology bandwagon. I refused to buy dvd's until they stopped making most movies on VHS. I didn't want to buy a digital camera because I liked getting film developed. I kept my old school - tough as nails - dropped it in a pool and it survived - cell phone as long as I could.

Now it's Facebook. I follow so many blogs on Facebook but for some reason I didn't have my own page... until now. Now I have my very own real life Miss Melissa Facebook Page.

I'm back from my week of traveling. I spent Tuesday to Friday in Niagra Falls for a work convention and then flew to Vegas Saturday morning to watch a co-worker get married and then flew home on Sunday. We stayed at the Venetian and it was stunning. Now, thanks to the confidentiality agreement at the convention and the whole "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" rule I don't have very many photos for you. I do have a few though.

I am sitting at the airport in Toronto waiting for my plane back to Vancouver. I've spent the last few days in Niagra Falls for a work convention. I am exhausted so I'd like to say I'm looking forward to some down time this weekend but tomorrow morning at 7am I will be flying to Vegas for the weekend to see a co-worker get married.

Faux Fur

This faux fur vest is one of the pieces I bought from the H&M grand opening. I've always shy'd away from fur for some reason but I thought this vest was a great way to get comfortable with the idea. It's not as in your face as a fur coat.

I wore it to dinner with a friend of mine and while I was on my way to dinner I realized that I should stop and take photos. I pulled over to the side of the road, pulled out my tripod and crossed my fingers no one would see me. You'd think I'd be used to the eyes of judgmental people passing by but no, I still dread people staring and wondering who the self absorbed girl taking photos of herself is.

Luckily no one pulled over and I was left to take pictures in peace. Although, now that I think about it, I was standing in a ditch on the side of the road next to a car with my 4-way blinkers on and no one pulled over to help me? What if I had legitimately been in trouble? I'm sure this faux fur vest must have made it look like I was being attacked by some sort of small furry animal... like a Koala.

I can't believe no one stopped to save me from being attacked by a Koala in a ditch. People are so rude these days.

Walking into the grand opening of the H&M in Metrotown was surreal. The racks of clothing were untouched, there was wine and delicious appy's all around and everything was 20% off. Within minutes of arriving all of us ladies had arms full of amazing pieces, a cocktail in our hands and we still managed to chat and say hello to all our fellow bloggers.

That's talent my friends.

It was such a great evening and to top it off I got to meet some more of my favourite Vancouver bloggers. I managed to pick up a few goodies that I will be showing all of you very soon.

Thanks so much to LJ PR and H&M for putting on this event. If you haven't gone to check out the new H&M in Metrotown then I hope you get the opportunity to soon. It's 2 floors of shopping amazingness... I may or may not be already planning my next shopping trip.

A little bit Country

Remember when I was at the farm in Winnipeg and got all dolled up at the farm in head to toe American Apparel to let my Canadian followers know about teambuy.ca and their 50% off AA deal? Well obviously I took advantage of that deal and this is one of the two skirts I bought after the buy was over. Do you know how amazing it was to get 50% off of any item I picked in the store? It makes regular sale shopping seem kind of sad now. And to top it off, every morning I wake up to more Team Buy deals in my email inbox, like 75% off Zumba classes or 81% off at the spa. Sigh.

Okay enough on shopping. Let's talk about the fact that after careful review, this outfit which I originally thought was "ladylike" has turned out to be a little bit country. I guess I was inspired after spending a week on a farm and taking pictures of horses. Which now has me kind of concerned about what might inspire me next weekend when I spend it in Vegas. Let's just hope I don't get pictures of anyone wearing tassels.

Darn you suede

If you follow me on twitter you may have read my tweet a few days back about my frustration towards all of the suede in shoe stores. I live in Vancouver, a city so adorably nick named Raincouver. I don't want to buy a pair of suede shoes to then have to purchase 5 different suede protection sprays when I know I will be too scared to wear them anyways if there is any chance there may be rain... which is most days. I have a particular pair of booties in mind that I have been searching for and so far any pair that has come close is in suede. I am officially bitter towards suede. /end rant

With that said, I am kind of really excited that it's jeans and blazer weather again. You thought my obsession with that combo would die out over the summer didn't you? Wishful thinking my friends... wishful thinking.

I know what you`re thinking. I seem so super cool so why am I at home blogging on a Saturday night and not out on the town? Well you're right, normally I'd be out doing {insert cool activity here} but tonight I'm too full of Turkey to move. It's Thanksgiving long weekend here in Canada and tonight we had dinner at Mike's parents.

I have another Turkey dinner at my mom's tomorrow so I think it's time to whip out my pants with the elastic waist. Another strategy is to wear a flowy skirt and place the waist band right above your turkey belly. Food baby camouflaged. Maybe I should put less effort into thinking up ways to hide a turkey belly and just go to the gym... nah.

Disclaimer: I lied, I probably wouldn't have been out on the town doing anything cool. I probably would have been watching something on the pvr or sleeping ;) I also know you weren't thinking about how cool I am. But a girl can dream.

Winnipeg in Classy Photos

We started in downtown Winnipeg, ventured out to the farm, drove out to his families home on the lake and then ended the week back in the city. While all of Mike's family was amazing, I had the most amazing few days on the farm. The people, the relaxation, playing tourist, stuffing my face with delicious food... even my allergies didn't interrupt my fun.

Am I the only one melting over the kitten and dog? I took like 300 photos of animals on the farm and 3 of people. 200 of the animal photos were of the kittens, 99 were of the dogs and 1 was of a horse peeing. Mike took more pictures of the horses not doing their business though, so I posted one of those for you. Miss Melissa is too classy for a horse peeing photo.

Today started off on a stressful note when I realized my car had a flat tire (I may have realized this while driving, turns out a flat tire sounds horrible). So now I'm annoyed and not feeling very chatty.

I've realized that taking a week off of work results in a really stressful following couple weeks so I'm doing the best not to go completely bonkers.

Luckily last night I got a couple things done that I have been wanting to do for a little while now (including a fall fashion inspiration board) so I am feeling good about that.

Okay, that's all the talking you get. I need a coffee and a dozen cookies asap.

Fashion's First Night

Just before I left for Winnipeg, West 4th celebrated Fashion's First Night. Stores all along West 4th participated with sales and events resulting in a spectacular evening of shopping.

Cara of A Fashion Love Affair and I spent the evening at the Urban Rack where Jen of a Prairie Girl in the City is GM and Assistant buyer. We each got dolled up in some of Urban Rack's amazing pieces, styled windows and ate candy (that was part of the deal right?). Cara chose a stripped tank and maxi skirt while I chose a black top and skinny jeans. We both wore a Lilla P Origami Wrap to show customers how many ways they can be tied.

Modeling on the Farm

I don't want to alarm anyone, but it's turns out that when you're on a farm it's not really appropriate to wear a skirt, lace top and stilettos. Apparently it's more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of place. Luckily, I'm a fan of the laid back combo.

The weather in Winnipeg was amazing the entire time we were there. I wore the one pair of shorts (that I accidentally packed) 90% of the time. The first couple days were windy so it did get pretty chilly in the shade so a huge sweater and light scarf were perfect for walking around the farm.

My disdain for packing is magnified when I'm packing for a trip that I know nothing about. Aside from attending a wedding, my week in Winnipeg is a mystery to me. The weather, any activities, where we are staying... I know nothing. When I asked Mike to fill me in about the trip his exact words were "you'll probably be bored".

Well don't get me too excited.

I will be gone for a week and I'm unsure about Internet access (shockingly Mike couldn't tell me much about that) so hopefully I'll have it occasionally and be able to blog a bit. I am pretty sure I will have Internet on Monday because I have something exciting to tell all of you about (it involves shopping... what else?)

Having my clothes spread between my place and Mike's place finally caught up to me! I was convinced my nude heels were at Mike's so when I was packing my stuff up for the weekend I didn't worry about packing shoes for the gala I was attending. Huge mistake on my part. They weren't at Mike's, they were sitting in a bag on my couch at my place (aren't you imagining how organized my place is now?).

So I had a moment of girly panic where I was trying to figure out if I should just buy new shoes or try to get mine from home. Long story short - thanks to my sister my shoes met me at the gala but they weren't photographed.

I always love attending the Ronald McDonald House Charity Galas. The stories are so motivational and seeing everyone work together to help out an amazing charity is always so special. This year had a wizard of oz theme and I can't wait to show you the photos.

Kristi was unable to make it to Subeez on Sunday (babysitters are hard to come by) so I invited them to lunch with my Mom on Monday! My mom refuses to be photographed so Isabel made for some enjoyable picture taking. They also arrived with mini cupcakes! Trying to keep those away from Isabel was quite the task but I didn't want to be responsible for baby's first sugar high.

Monday evening was dinner with my Dad and siblings. The one thing I love about birthdays is that it's an excuse to get far more dressed up then needed for a dinner out. Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way!

My mom has been dabbling in cake decorating and has gotten really great at it! She made me a fashion themed cake to bring to dinner which I thought was adorable. It also tasted amazing (the purse was confetti cake and the shoe box was chocolate).

Now that I've posted all of my pictures my birthday is officially over. Shucks! I had the most amazing weather on Monday but on Tuesday the skies turned grey. I have been going crazy wanting to shop for clothing for fall but I know I need to do an inventory of my closet before I do so. Now all I need is the motivation to sort through clothes. I wonder if I could get some girlfriends over to help me if I bribe them with wine?

Barefoot Contessa Video

Thanks so much to everyone for the birthday wishes. I love birthdays and didn't think I would be bothered by turning 29, but I admittedly have had a few moments this year. Not really sure why but it was nothing little blog layout revamping couldn't fix ;)

Birthdays are always busy with lunches and dinners in my family, so on Sunday evening a small group of friends got together for Sangria and a bite to eat at Subeez. I wanted something relaxed and fun which is exactly what I got. It was so nice seeing everyone.

I couldn't have been more pleased with the Standing Armed SS12 collection preview. The colours, patterns, textures and silhouettes were stunning. I would wear every single piece. It was such a nice change having the models standing around the room so we could actually take the time to view the collection.

Playing Dress Up

These pictures are from a week or so back. I kept forgetting to post them and when I remembered today I didn't have my laptop. So I uploaded them onto Mike's computer (shhh, don't tell him).

The other night I rummaged through my closet and played dress up. I have been feeling really uninspired lately so getting dressed hasn't been any fun. After a successful dress up session I'm feeling excited about clothes again. Mind you, we are in the middle of a mild heat wave so I'll probably just be wearing sundresses for a few weeks which is pretty lazy and the opposite of exciting but oh well, details details.

I love a good night of playing dress up so that's all that matters.

Flat Iron Review

I was recently asked to try out the Hana Professional 1.5" Flat Iron from Misikko. I had literally lost my flat iron (don't ask how, I still have no idea how I could lose a flat iron) a week before the offer to test out this iron so I was even more willing to say yes. The one I lost was old and ready to retire anyways. I'm fairly convinced it ran away and is living in a retirement home in Palm Springs.

I may not straighten my hair very often, but I do use a flat iron to tame my bangs. I've also wanted to try waving my hair with a flat iron but was never able to thanks to the fact that my old iron couldn't heat up very well anymore.

My new Flat Iron arrived extremely quickly and in the most adorable packaging. I was too excited to find my camera so I took a picture on my blackberry before ripping it open like a kid on Christmas morning.

I've had this iron for almost a month now, and while I haven't mastered the waving process I am extremely impressed with this iron. The quality is great and it heats up really quickly.

If you're like most women and you straighten your hair, I think you'd be really happy with this iron (See the Chi Flat Irons they carry here) . I was also really happy with the service Misikko provided so if you're not in the market for a new straightening iron, they do carry a variety of products such as hair dryers.

Now all I have to do is master waving my hair with this thing. Luckily Cara did a wavy hair tutorial. Time to practice!

Day 2 Hair

When I mentioned in a previous post that I had some photos to post of the wedding and then the day after (day 2 hair and hungover eyes are awesome) you all left some kind comments about how my hair in that post looked great for day 2 hair. Oh no no my friends. That was not day 2 hair. this... this is day 2 hair. Day 2 hair and I-drank-too-much-wine-last-night eyes.

The morning after the wedding I was in the mood for food and lots of it. Brunch to be exact.

It was a gorgeous day and perfect for sitting on the patio at Score on Davie eating french toast and hashbrowns. Add to that some mojitos and Caesars and it was the ideal morning.

It was also an opportunity to wear the lace shell I bought from the Banana Republic Mad Men line. You can't go wrong with gold lace.
