Change is Bad

Outfit Details:
Top: Zara
Shorts: Jacob
Sandals: Payless
Bag: Aldo
This was one of those situations where I tried a new hairstyle and then caught a glimpse of my head in the rear view mirror on the way to dinner and cringed because I no longer liked it. I told myself that I just didn't like it because I hate any kind of hair-change and I would like it later. After an enjoyable dinner with friends I caught another glimpse of my hair in my reflection on the car window and cringed again. I think I need longer hair to pull off a centre-part-braided-bohemian look. I'll try it again in 2 years when my super slow growing hair finally grows an inch.

I'm in the process of planning a trip to Winnipeg to meet Mike's relatives. Turns out flying within Canada is ridiculously expensive and it would be cheaper to fly to Hawaii. Think Mike would notice if I accidentally purchase tickets to Hawaii? No? Okay good. Aloha!

  1. I think your hair looks really cute. And red looks great on you, love how you paired it with the black shorts. Nice post, good luck with the trip planning.

ps: I'd rather go to Hawaii too! Even though I love it here.

  3. My friends and I joke about how we used to wear a middle part, and whenever we style it that way it looks awful! I'm always jealous when I see girls that can pull it off, my face is a bit too round. I think you can certainly work the middle part, but I know what you mean about wanting your hair longer. I waited for mine to grow long before I cut straight bangs, and it was work the wait!

  4. I feel this way about my hair too.
I have a cow lick too, so even just parting my hair in the middle makes it look wonky.

I basically stick to a side part or pony tails now :( I have a weird shaped head.

  5. When I first saw these photos before I read your post I was thinking on how I wanted to comment on how much I love your hair!

Maybe you have a certain image in mind- the longggg, boho hair- and it is not that, and that's what you are focused on, and therefore, disappointed with?

As an East Coaster who lives on the West Coast and maintains close family ties, I know your flight price woes all too well.

  6. I immediately thought "cute hair!" and soon as the first pic loaded. So maybe your face responds to cuteness by cringing? That's my diagnosis. Your cringe meter is broken.

  7. Anytime in hawaii is great - haha maybe Mike's parents would be even happy to meet there - it's half way kind of right (or not)?

i think your braids look good - your hair isn't too short so it works but of course it's up to you how you feel about it.

  12. I personally like the hairdo! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip from Montreal (where we live) to Prince Edward Island and the flights are ABSURD, about $700 - $800 whereas Miami would cost us $300 each return. I'm baffled by it! I also never knew it was SO expensive to fly within Canada!

  13. center parts are quite beautiful simply because they're incredibly bold. They work best on more symmetrical faces. When you pair them with the braids it really opens up the face and exposes the entire forehead. (This is usually why people feel its unflattering on them.) I think you could rock a center part, but your hair is a bit on the finer side for the two braids. If you want to soften it just a little bit you could try doing a more loose braid such as a "push braid" (I'll show you the next time I see you) or even just try loosely braiding one side. It's a different look but can be really cute! I do love that you did something different, even if you weren't super stoked on it. You'd also look amazing in some messy updos.

  15. I think you can totally pull off this style. Maybe try parting your hair to the side instead of straight down the middle. - Katy

  16. I think this looks great on you! I definitely can't pull off a center part, but it flatters you!

  20. I was going to be all like "man, I know Melissa, I can't handle hair change either and I love centre parts but they look cringe worthy on me toooo! (when in fact it does look cute on you)" but then you had to add that blurb about Winnipeg and now you stole my thunder. I have to write about that!
IT'S SO FRUSTRATING, why can't Canada help out a little!? If Mike get's mad about the Hawaii trip you guys are welcome to hop in my luggage when I fly to the Peg in Aug! Woo! (but I call dibs for your Hawaii luggage then, k?) xx
