Fashion Resolution

I don't know where along the line I got into my head that I was handy with a pair of scissors and a needle and thread, but thanks to my disillusions I have failed at far too many 'do it yourself' tailoring attempts. I can barely cut a straight line let alone properly hem something by hand. Unfortunately I have a fear of taking things to the Tailor so I had kind of come to terms with the fact that I'd never be a girl who could re-work vintage pieces or make my clothes fit perfectly with a nip or a tuck.

That is until Kelsey of The Anthology asked me what my fashion resolution was for the New Year.

What a perfect opportunity to put down my scissors and stop the hemming madness.

You can find my fashion resolution as well as the resolutions of 8 other Vancouver bloggers in Kelsey's three part series. And trust me, this is a must read. Especially if you have a overly crowded closet or a green couch that needs some updating.

Part Two
Part Three

Thanks again for including me Kelsey!

  3. hehe this post made me chuckle. Hopefully you'll find an amazing tailor to help you with tearing clothes apart ;D (and putting them back together, of course)

  4. This picture is pretty amusing! Good for you for stepping up and taking charge! I think you'll find it a good investment. Personally, I can't sew to save my life, haha.

  5. miss melissa... let me tell u i went to fashion school and i still dont sew any of my hems. i take them to a tailor as if i dont own a sewing machine or know how to use it. the way i see it my time is so much more valuable than slaving away and they do a much better job. the only times i actually do it on my own is when i have old vintage skirts that have a very easy hem to sew. still putting the right colour of thread and actually getting myself to the sewing machine takes a lot of effort. i'm just super lazy.
anyways i'm really excited to get to know u 2 better this year. who knows maybe we can have a little blogger meetup soon!

  6. If it makes you feel any better I:
    1) Believe that you can do it!
    2) Think that you got the length just right in that picture :P

    Happy New Year dear!

  7. Oh, I'm awful at tailoring my own things too. I just don't have the patience to learn! I love that photo -- it perfectly sums up everything :)

  12. Oh goodness, this reminds me of a time this summer when I bought this darling little beige boho dress and since it was too sheer to wear on it's own, I went on the hunt for a slip. Of course, I wanted to wear it that night so there was only time to check at a store or two for the right slip. I wasn't able to find one the proper length to go with this dress, so I bought a longer one thinking "oh, I'll just cut it to the right length!"... normally I'm a fairly level-headed girl, but I will tell you this ended with me throwing scissors across the room (the fella was safely in the other room, away from my weapon throwing), uttering a mix of profanities and wimpering, and then stomping to my room, laying on my bed and pouting in true 5 year old fashion. NEVER will I attempt to shorten something again. I did, however, learn how to properly sew on buttons this year. Progress? The saddest part? My mom is a seamstress... this is what she does for a living. Unfortunately she doesn't live in this city!

  13. Wow, props to you for even being brave enough to try! I only sew on a loose button here or repair a ripped seam there. Any serious alterations or even a simple hemming job are best left in my tailor's hands.

  14. Love that pic! What is the lipstick that you are wearing? It's pretty much the color I've been on the prowl for...
