Red Coat Girl

About a year ago Mike and I were walking towards Stephos on Davie to indulge in a delicious Greek lunch. Walking in front of us was a girl wearing a red coat. It turns out she was applying for a job and had to wait around for a while so she was in my line of vision for most of my meal.

I mentioned to Mike how much I adored her red coat but the only problem with wearing a coat of such a distinct colour is that if you wear it enough you end up being known as "Red Coat girl". We talked about it for a few minutes but Mike kind of laughed off my idea of a red coat being so noticeable.

A month later Mike and I were walking and I saw another girl in a red coat. I told him that I really liked that red coat as well and it was really similar to the girl we saw in Stephos. That's when we realized it was the same girl.

"See Mike? Do you really think I would have noticed her twice if she hadn't been wearing the red coat?"

I'm still not sure he believed my theory.

Another month or so later I was walking downtown alone when I saw her again. Same red coat.

So I sent Mike a text "I just saw Red Coat girl".

To which he replied "point proven".

Coat: Forever21.
Sweater: Zara.
Jeans: Gap.
Boots: Steve Madden.
Necklace: Banana Republic.
Gloves: Sears or something.

I don't know where my deep seeded need to not repeat clothing came from (who am I kidding... I blame facebook) but I legitimately worry about wearing something too often. I wasn't going to wear this coat today because I had worn it in a recent post. I know it's not realistic to never repeat clothing and it's even less realistic with outerwear which is why up until recently I hadn't purchased a red coat.

But I'm a real girl on a real budget and I'm going to have to get over my silliness because I really like this coat.

Besides, "Red Coat Girl" kind of has a nice ring to it.

  1. I love that red coat. It looks great on you! And I would definitely say there are far worse things to be known as than "Red Coat Girl". It's a pretty cute nickname, actually.

  2. Well red definitely looks great on you and I think it would be great to be known as "red coat girl" at least you're admiring her!

  3. I love the red coat. I think certain things can become trade mark items. If you were wearing the same old ratty t-shirt from high school... I might tell you to buy something new. Red coats are to die for.... wear it everyday!

  4. Haha, I completely agree with your theory about becoming such & such girl. It happened to me with my mustard laptop case. I met someone at a party who admitted to knowing me as the girl with the yellow laptop case. I walk to work every day & am always walking around downtown, so I tend to pass the same people on a daily basis. Anyway, love the red coat (I'm a 'red coat girl' myself!!) and I lovvve your necklace! I've been on the the hunt for a short but sturdy gold necklace, and yours looks gorgeous!

  8. I can't believe this coat is from 21! Clearly I'm not shopping there enough. But I like your bold coat theory... seems totally plausible to me.

  10. don't feel bad! i outfit-repeat ALL the time. it's hard not to, not out of laziness but because yes, we're on a budget. we're real people :) and that's okay! it makes you more relatable, for sure. anyway, LOVE the coat -- f21's outerwear is great because it's so cheap, but still gets the job done!

  13. Love the story Melissa, so cute. You look adorable in your red coat... it totally pops against your blonde locks and goes so well with the cognac boots! I've been wanting to invest in a red coat for a while too but it's so hard to find a good one! Crossing my fingers for boxing day sales :D

    Have a lovely week girl!

  17. Maybe it's fate that you encountered the Red Coat girl 3 times? It was a sign for you to purchase your own red coat. Love the colour! I need to break out of the box and purchase something not black, gray, white, etc. Hahaha. My wardrobe colour is so drab. I know what you mean when you spot someone whose wearing something distinctive. Out of a sea of people, it's the first thing you notice.

  18. Ooh the clean classic lines of that red coat, the striped top, the gold knot statement necklace--love! And I know what you mean about the desire not to repeat clothing. Blogging probably exacerbates it and you probably feel it much more than I do because you post outfits on a daily basis and I only do it once a week lol. It's that feeling of having something shiny and new to wear and to show the blogosphere. :)
