It has happened to all of us... getting tricked by a dressing room skinny mirror.
Going home only to find out that an item of clothing that looked spectacular in a dressing room isn't flattering at all is the worst!
Now imagine that skinny mirror is in your bedroom. 8 or so years ago I bought a mirror from Walmart that ended up being a skinny mirror. Trying an outfit on and looking in that mirror is the biggest confidence boost ever! The problem? I arrive at my boyfriends house, a restaurant, or even the occasional club and look in the mirror only to cringe. Is that what I actually look like?
Which mirror is telling me the truth?
They say that most women have a distorted view of what their body looks like but how can we be expected to know what we look like when every mirror we look in gives us a different sized reflection?
Blazer and Shoes: Urban Outfitters. Top: Jacob. Scarf: Le Chateau. Jeans: True Value Vintage. The best accessory? The poppy
I got these shoes on sale for $20 (before the shopping ban) and I love them. I think I love shoes so much because they aren't affected by skinny mirrors or fat mirrors. They are lovely in any reflection.
I wore the blue scarf with this outfit to sushi with a friend. While I love the colour, it's not the warmest of scarves so later in the afternoon when I decided to drink tea and read my new Lucky magazine out on Mike's balcony I had to switch it up for this pink infinity scarf from Fine Finds in Yaletown.
I have to remember that it's November, and just because it's sunny doesn't mean that it's warm. That breeze will chill you to the bone! But with a view like this it's worth it.

Those shoes are absolutely adorable! Love!
ReplyDeleteLove the shoes, and good for you for sticking to the shopping ban. I'm failing miserably, but then again, I've just been feeling miserable period, so a bit of retail therapy at Joe Fresh here and some new socks there are helping to perk me up. :) As for the skinny mirror experience, I know exactly what you're talking about! If you look at yourself in photos and mirrors, it's amazing what a difference a certain photo angle or the angle of a mirror can make. I just try to shore up my self-confidence when I look good and shrug off the times I look bad lol.
ReplyDeleteand i thought i was the only one perplexed about mirrors! lol
ReplyDeleteWas the mirror a long skinny one? Because I definitely had one like that in my dorm and it always made me look super skinny!
ReplyDeletePs. That view is beautiful!
I know exactly what you're talking about with skinny mirrors! There is one in the hallway outside apartment and I ALWAYS look better in that one. So silly. These pictures are really cute...I wish I had that view!
ReplyDeleteCute outfit! LOVE those shoes! & what a lovely view.
ReplyDeleteAw, I'm sure you look beautiful no matter what the mirror says.
ReplyDeletethose shoes are so cute, just the perfect amount of girlie! I feel you on the skinny mirror. We have a skinny mirror at work and every morning I go look in it right away, and then for the rest of the day I pretend thats how I look and I try not to look in any other mirrors, hahaha.
ReplyDelete<3 Kastles
You know, I think that's part of the beauty of it all. We never really get to see a true reflection of ourselves, and I think in a sense we weren't really meant to. You should dress to look presentable and appropriate, yes, but aside from that, I think it's how we feel that counts.
ReplyDeleteLove the shoes!
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are gorgeous! I have a skinny mirror at home too, but I agree with Kastles, sometimes it's better to not look in any other mirrors throughout the day, haha.
ReplyDeleteI have a deceptive mirror in my bathroom. It's not a skinny mirror but is more of a soft-focus mirror, so my hair and makeup always look really good in there, but when I look in my bedroom mirror I look like crap! I keep going back and forth between the two trying to get it right!
ReplyDeleteI love those shoes and the various scarfs - so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI hear you on skinny mirrors. Forever21 is the worst! My long mirror in my room is the opposite, though - it's definitely a fat mirror, which can be good and bad!
What a gorgeous view!
ReplyDeleteMy friend tells me that I have a skinny mirror (from Walmart) and it definitely has it's good and bad moments...
But this outfit looks great on you and I think that would hold true in any mirror!
Just found your blog - love it :) and I feel you about the mirror, I have a fat mirror at home so I know I always look way better when I leave the house, hah. Time to invest in a new mirror tho. PMS? The horror.
ReplyDeleteJen: Thanks! It took almost a month for them to ship so I was pretty excited when they showed up haha.
ReplyDeleteLisa: I'm only 11 days in with this shopping ban and i'm already having withdrawls :p Being on holidays and not being able to shop is evil!
Angie: nah, i'm with you on this one ;)
Kaydee: Yah the long narrow one! If you don't hang it up (lean it against a wall) it's a super skinny mirror. Which is great until I look in another mirror. haha
BFF: Just assume the mirror in the hallway is the accurate one. That's my theory - the skinny mirror is obviously the correct one :p
Cara-Mia: Thank you! Yah I love this view. It's almost too cold to sit outside now though!
Cicy: Aw you're way too kind.
Kastles: I will have to try that! My fear is that I think I look better than I do and people laugh at me (i'm an insecure child at heart ;))
Angeline: I never thought of it like that. Maybe you're right, maybe we aren't meant to know our true size because it doesn't matter.. as long as we are happy?
Samantha: Thanks xo
Lydia Marie: I will have to try that... i'll let you know how it goes haha
Melanie: That would be super frustrating! Why can't mirror manufacturers get it right!
Ashley: Thank you :) I'm kind of on a scarf kick! The nice thing about a 'fat' mirror at home is that when you see your reflection in another mirror it's a positive difference haha. But i'd go crazy.. my boyfriends bathroom has fat mirrors and i've come close to breaking them :p
Katie: You're so sweet! I'm trying to rely less on my skinny mirror for validation on how I look haha. We probably have the same mirror!
perhaps that is why I return a lot of my purchases... that or i'm just an impulsive shopper...
ReplyDeleteArgh, I definitely understand your skinny mirror woes! But on a brighter note, your shoes are INSANELY adorable! Love 'em!
ReplyDeleteMy in-laws own a skinny mirror that I actually like! It has the opposite effect than usual!
ReplyDeleteAnd hands down, I must agree that the poppy is the best piece of your outfit for today :)
Love the jeans from TVV.

i know, same with the dressing room light!:)
ReplyDeletei like the blues and the pop of red.
I often think they have skinny mirrors at the gym. I think they do this so people feel more confident when they are there.
